The ESRF, the European Synchrotron, is an international research facility based in Grenoble, France. Votre mission : You will join the ESRF Instrumentation Services and Development Division (ISDD) as part of a collaborative project with the ULB (Université Libre de Bruxelles) to develop mechatronics concepts which combine mechanical design with on-line metrology and fast-feedback closed-loop control. The main objective of the project is to develop new mechatronics concepts. These shall be applied to a six degrees-of-freedom Nano-positioning and Active Stabilisation Stage (NASS) for installation on the ID31 beamline (http://www.esrf.eu/UsersAndScience/Experiments/StructMaterials/ID31). The work will include the development of a dedicated mechatronic architecture, the design of robust control strategies, and experimental validation with the expert teams at ULB and ESRF. The first year will be spent at ULB in Bruxelles to benefit from the expertise of Prof. C. Collette who will be your academic supervisor. The second year will be mostly spent at ESRF where you will actively participate in the study of the NASS using the new concepts you have developed. The third year will be shared between ESRF and ULB to characterise the NASS and write the thesis. Profil recherché : - Degree allowing enrolment for a PhD (such as MSc, Master 2 de Recherche, Laurea or equivalent) in mechanical engineering or mechatronics - Strong knowledge in vibration theory and automatic control - Good interpersonal skills are essential to integrate into a multidisciplinary and international research team - Proficiency in English (working language at the ESRF)
